Can you get stars for free in CSGO?
Short answer: there’s no spendable currency called “stars” in CS2 to get for free or otherwise – it was never something you could farm, trade, or buy in the first place.
Where the confusion comes from
What people are usually asking about is the Gold Nova rank badges in CS2’s competitive matchmaking and Premier modes – Gold Nova I through Gold Nova Master – whose icons are star-shaped, which is why the tier gets nicknamed “stars” informally. Every low-elo grinder remembers the climb out of Nova – it’s where the biggest jump in game sense happens, from silver-standard positioning to actually reading utility and rotations. That rank is earned purely by your competitive performance (your matchmaking rating from wins, losses, and individual performance), climbing the skill groups from Silver up through Gold Nova, Master Guardian, Legendary Eagle, Supreme, and Global Elite. There’s no way to buy, trade, or grind it through missions – it only moves with how you actually play.
What it isn’t
- Not an in-game currency. You can’t spend rank progress on weapons, skins, or stickers.
- Not something a third-party site hands out. CSGO Empire and similar skin-betting platforms deal in their own Coins (see our Empire Coins guide), which have no connection to your CS2 competitive rank.
- Not the same as Pick’Ems coins either – those are the separate Bronze/Silver/Gold/Diamond cosmetics earned at Majors. See our Diamond Pick’Ems coins guide.
