Mobile Gaming is the fastest growing section in the gaming industry. Tencent Mobile has announced a Rs. 50 Lakhs ( ~ $70,000 ) tournament for Indian PUBG Mobile enthusiasts. This will be the biggest esports tournament in India. Coming from Tencent itself, this tournament will be only for Indian College students. Tencent is looking forth to tap into one of the world’s biggest smartphone gaming markets with this move.
PUBG & India
PUBG took the gaming industry by storm in 2017. The Battle Royale Genre has seen a resurgence in the past year with PUBG and Fortnite dominating the landscape. The Game is developed by PUBG Corporation and is available on a variety of platforms such as PC, Console and Mobile. The game enjoyed time as Steam’s best-seller game for a period of 14 months before being dethroned by Dark Souls: Remastered.
PUB’s mobile release came much later, but it has already seen a lot of action especially in India. The country which comprises around 10% of the World’s Gamers is definitely a prime gaming destination in the upcoming decade. There were 291 million smartphone users in India at the end of 2017. This number is only expected to grow with the advent of better Internet speeds.
PUBG Mobile has already crossed the figure of 10 million active daily users. The PUBG Mobile Campus Championship
The PUBG Mobile Campus Championship is the first esports tournament for PUBG Mobile on such a large scale in India. Tencent’s direct
involvement in the setup of this tournament signals the importance of the Indian market for PUBG Mobile.
Tencent has partnered up with Oppo ( The World’s 4th largest Mobile manufacturer ) to host this tournament. There are several rules regarding the competition which can be read on their official webpage. The competition is open only to college students and is bound to garner a lot of interest for the local scene.
The registration for the tournament is live on Pubgmobile.in. The initial online stage is limited to the first 10,000 teams that sign up for the tournament. The Grand finals will take place on October 20-21 in Bengaluru, India.
