India is one of the laggards in esports. Despite having one of the biggest populations in the world, it has not been able to produce top tier gamers.
Recently Ronnie Screwvala announced a new esports league. The league features $15 million in investments into esports in the region. It envisions Television content along with local teams featuring fan content.
The tournament will be biannual and will feature a prize pool of 50,00,000 rupees ( $75,000). This is a massive boost for Indian esports which has largely been fragmented and low-key.
The Ucypher League will be showcased on MTV. The matches will be curated and produced to cater to the TV audience. It will not be cast live.
“We want to increase the popularity and get more people to watch eSports. If we do a live telecast, it will be difficult to get non-gamers. Therefore, we have decided to package it smartly, we know the art of storytelling, which will make for a good programming too
